Tips for a Stress-Free Photo Shoot

Newborn baby photography is becoming a must for new mommies and daddies.  There is nothing more important that capturing those first few days of life.  The serenity, innocence and delicate features of a slumbering newborn is unlike anything else in the world.  As photography technology improves, photographers are able to capture every wrinkle, every sleepy grin and every tiny toe that make you swoon every time.  Before you schedule your appointment, here are a few tips that will make your session a pleasure for everyone involved.

Relax

This cannot be said enough.  Relax, relax, relax.  Taking your newborn child out into the world can be stressful, so it is natural to be a little bit on edge.  However, your baby can sense your anxiety and will also become nervous.  If you take a moment to just breathe, your baby’s photography shoot will go smoothly, seamlessly, and be a pleasure for all involved.

We Love Sleepy Babies

Most of the shots in the session will be taken while your little one is sleeping.  The deeper the sleep, the easier it will be to pose and position your baby to achieve those heart melting compositions.  Bring your baby in around normal nap times, when your child is in a heavy sleep.

Find Your Baby’s Best Mood

Babies tend to be calmer and more agreeable in the earlier parts of the day.  Schedule your newborn photography session in the early afternoon or late morning.  Pay attention to what time of day your child seems most cooperative and try to aim for that window of time.  No one can predict how a newborn will behave, but it can’t hurt to try.

Feed Your Little One

A full belly makes for a happy baby.  Try to wait and feed your newborn until right before the photography session begins.  Feed and burp your baby right before the session begins.  Photography sessions can last a few hours, so don’t be afraid to stop the shoot to feed again if necessary.

Plan for Props Ahead of Time

Though your baby is a new addition in your life, your little one probably already has a few items that make up an everyday look.  Whether it is a little knit hat that grandma made, or the after bath hooded blanket that he can’t live with out, there are probably some props that you’d like to include in your newborn’s photo shoot.
